For more than 40 years, I have written about, commented on and photographed the beef business

Agriculture and the outdoors:
Not just my career but my passion.

Who I am

I’m Burt Rutherford, former senior editor of BEEF magazine and a lifelong writer. My career is focused on agriculture and the outdoor market—writing and reporting, observing and commenting on agriculture, the beef business and outdoor recreation.

Helping to Feed the World

13 years with BEEF magazine gave me a broad and deep understanding of the information that ag producers need. That includes knowing how to effectively share that information to help them become better and more efficient at what they do—provide the safest, most abundant food supply in the world.

In Print

My most recent stop in this adventure called life was Senior Editor of BEEF magazine and its digital products. The corporation that owns BEEF elected to suspend publication with the January 2021 issue, allowing me to explore other opportunities.

Deep in the Heart of Texas

Prior to BEEF, I was communications director for the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. It was there I was trained in media relations, working as spokesperson for the association in major events such as the diagnosis of BSE, the Oprah Winfrey trial and others.

Branching Outdoors

A lifetime of hunting and fishing led me to start freelancing as an outdoor writer. I became involved with the Texas Outdoor Writers Association, helping guide the organization as a board member and officer, serving as president. Company policy required I end my freelance writing when I joined BEEF.

I Go Way Back

My career started in ag communications while still a college student. My junior year I began freelancing for the North American Limousin Foundation, which is the registry for the Limousin breed of cattle. That turned into a part-time job my senior year and a full-time position immediately upon graduation.
